What is a Hyperlink?

A hyperlink, often referred to as a web link, serves as a reference to data with a specific address. Users can easily access the destination by clicking or hovering over the hyperlink. Hyperlinks can appear as text, images, icons, or graphics, guiding users to different web pages or documents, or even specific sections within the same document.

For example, clicking on a link that directs you to the Jimni Nomics homepage takes you to that specific webpage. Each search result on Google is also a hyperlink; selecting one takes you to the corresponding webpage. Without hyperlinks, users would need to remember every URL to navigate the vast internet.

Hyperlinks and HTML

In HTML, hyperlinks are created using the tag, with "a" standing for anchor tag. The text linked is known as anchor text.

To create a hyperlink, you use the anchor tags, allowing users to click on a text or image to reach another page or section. This feature is a defining element of the World Wide Web, enabling users to connect documents across various networks and devices. Hyperlinks originated from the concept of scholarly references, evolving into a tool for easy navigation across different authors' websites and pages.

Creating HTML Links

To create a hyperlink, you can use the following HTML structure:

Example Link

This tag has an opening and closing tag, with the visible clickable text between them. The href attribute specifies the URL the link will direct users to when clicked. The default hyperlink appearance includes blue text and an underline, indicating its clickable nature.

Linking to Other Pages on Your Site

Internal links direct users to different pages within the same website. For instance:

In this example, the links point to different pages without needing the full URL, as they are relative to the current site structure.

Linking to Specific Sections

To create a link to a specific section on a page, add an id attribute to the desired section and link to it:

Then, reference that section in your link:

Opening Links in a New Tab

To ensure users remain on your site, you can set external links to open in a new tab by adding the target="_blank" attribute:

Email Links

Links can also be used to initiate an email. This can be done using the mailto: protocol:

Email Me!

This will open the user's default email client with the recipient's address pre-filled.
